Sense of Movement/Sens du Mouvement
Florence Debeugny, Pnina Granirer, Sonja Hébert, Sylvie Roussel-Janssens
(March 2 – April 1, 2006)

Sense of Movement is comprised of four female francophone artists who live in British Columbia. Florence Debeugny, Pnina Granirer, Sonja Hébert and Sylvie Roussel- Janssens explore the concept of movement to create a dynamic collaboration of various media.

The works in the exhibition are embedded with double meanings of the word “movement,” first with their physical and then with their symbolic or conceptual form. A wide range of media is explored, including photography, charcoal drawings, painting and installation.

In her exhibition statement, Florence Debeugny, who organized the show says, “These four visual artists share a common trajectory characterized by bi-culturality and a constant redefining of their identity. Movement is at the heart of their migratory life and is expressed in their art through references to dance, walk, flight and optical shifts of perspective.

Each artist’s work interprets this need for reconciliation in a unique way.  Granirer’s paintings focus on a quest for liberation from the past while Roussel-Jenssens' installation speaks of the need for stability on new ground. Hebert’s drawings express a profound desire for setting roots and Debeugny’s photographs express psychological shifts through varying depths of field.”

Sense of Movement was organized in partnership with Festival du Bois
