Mong Yen’s love of nature dates back to a very happy childhood in his native Cambodia. He was fifteen when the Khmer Rouge forced the Yen family to flee their native land. Mong chooses his subject matter from the natural environment through which he is reminded of his childhood. He likes to paint in egg tempera because of the quality of the colours—subtle and pure. He mixes dry pigment with water and egg yolk; there is nothing artificial in the medium, and once completed the paintings will last indefinitely.
