Jay Johnson: Everything Must Go (April 6 - May 13, 2006)
Viewers of this exhibition will be entranced by the enigmatic audio-kinetic sculptures, drawings, and interactive installations by Vancouver artist Jay Johnson. For the artist, the mechanical ingenuity he celebrates in his work is a trait to be valued, and increasingly protected.
In his artist's statement, Johnson reminds us that, "the information age rides like a giddy child on the shoulders of the machine." He goes on to say that he makes objects designed to trap the eye. True to his word, this collection of "machines" is a fusion of engineering and art. They whir and buzz, jerk and jolt. But they also prod our relationship with the waste side of over consumption. For every one object made by Johnson, thousands more pieces are junk for the landfill. |
