We are rushing on and on and on: Emily Carr Works Emily Carr works from the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery collection at The University of British Columbia October 10 - November 29, 2008
The title "we are rushing on and on and on" comes from Carr's October 31, 1933 journal entry when she is on the train to Chicago for the World's Fair. The words refer to her physical experience on the train and the reflections she has as she travels through the landscape. The trip offers her time to reflect, and also upon her return, marks a transition in her art practice.
The works on view date from 1935 - 42 and are complimented by archival objects, selected film clips and feature films. The exhibition offers the viewer the opportunity to place Carr within the context of her time and consider how her practice was informed by the modernization of the forest industry, urban growth and the colonial gesture of claiming objects, culture and land.
The exhibition is curated by Alison Rajah. Alison is currently completing her MA in Critical and Curatorial Studies at The University of British Columbia. Click here to download the Emily Carr monograph by Alison Rajah. [Click here] |
